As we continue to celebrate the Christmas season, December 28th brings a solemn reflection as we commemorate the Feast of the Holy Innocents. This poignant event in the Church’s liturgical calendar honors the infant boys who were martyred by King Herod’s decree, as told in the Gospel of Matthew.
The account of the Holy Innocents is one wrapped in both tragedy and profound significance. According to the Gospel narrative, Herod the Great, feeling threatened by the birth of the “new king,” ordered the massacre of all male infants in Bethlehem, hoping to eliminate the prophesied Messiah. These innocent children, although unable to comprehend their fate, became the first martyrs for Christ, highlighting the often-brutal reality of the struggle between earthly power and divine promise.
The Holy Innocents stand as powerful symbols of innocence and the tragic cost of human sinfulness. In their martyrdom, the Church finds a call to advocate for the voiceless and vulnerable in society. Their sacrifice challenges us to protect the sanctity of life, renew our commitments to justice, and ensure that no individual is marginalized or forgotten.
In remembering the Holy Innocents, we are forced to confront the harsh realities of a world often marked by suffering and injustice. Yet, their memory also instills hope, reminding us of the ultimate triumph of good over evil and the promise of redemption. These young souls, who unknowingly bore witness to Christ’s birth through their sacrifice, invite us to ponder the cost of discipleship at any age or stage of life.
On this feast day, let us honor the Holy Innocents by committing to actions that reflect their legacy of purity and faith. As we contemplate their story, may it inspire us to protect and cherish the lives of all innocents around us. In their memory, let us strive to be vigilant guardians of justice and peace in our communities.
Here at the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine, we honor the Holy Innocents' sacrifice within our mural, connecting them to a broader narrative of faith and martyrdom that includes Blessed Stanley, who, like them, stood for truth in the face of oppression.
